Dr. Jhonny Salomon: The Art of Medicine

Dr. Johnny Salomon

As one of Miami’s most renowned plastic surgeons, Dr. Jhonny Salomon masters the art of plastic surgery by offering his patients the latest and most advanced medical and surgical techniques. Committed to providing the highest standards, Dr. Salomon strives to deliver perfection to every patient. Haute Living caught up with the talented surgeon to discuss new medical techniques within his practice, why plastic surgery is the art of medicine and what he hopes his legacy will be.

Are there any new innovations or techniques you are using?

JS: We pride ourselves in remaining at the forefront in our field by consistently introducing new technologies, and we are steadily evolving. I truly feel that it is important to provide our patients with the most advanced innovations in both invasive and non-invasive procedures, and we are currently investigating Silhouette InstaLift, which utilizes dissolvable sutures to tighten the face and neck with minimal downtime. In the past year, we have introduced ThermiVa for rejuvenation of the external and internal regions of the vagina as well as some new and advanced fillers.

What sets you and your practice apart from others in the same field?

JS: I think what sets us apart is the overall vision I have for the practice. I’m a perfectionist and believe that it is important to deliver results that are of a high standard, while also remaining naturally beautiful. My goal is that my patients feel and look rejuvenated after a procedure while ensuring that it’s not drastically noticeable that work has been done. Our state-of-the-art medical practice delivers the most advanced technologies, which we incorporate at a very early stage of treatment. This, combined with our excellent team, who provide nothing short of five-star service, creates a comfortable environment and positively memorable experience for our patients.

So would you agree that plastic surgery is the art of medicine, and if so why?

JS: In my opinion, art is the fine-tuning of an equilibrium and the mastery surrounding this. Art can exist in at least three different realms: visual, time and judgment. The visual form of art is related to space, which includes fine-art forms such as painting, sculptures as well as plastic surgery. Art in time is the mastery of the equilibrium over time as exists, for example in music. The mastery of judgment is a form of art that is seen in many professions such as medical doctors and business strategists, as both are making a decision based on the judgment of a scenario involving a fine equilibrium of judgment. Plastic surgery is a great balance of art in space, judgment and possibly time.

What’s the greatest lesson you’ve learned through your years in practice?

JS: I have learned so many valuable lessons throughout my career. My practice has taught me the importance of refining my aesthetic judgment and the importance of patience, discipline and compassion. I have learned some of the most valuable lessons in life from my practice and patients.

What would your advice be for patients who want to get work done, if they haven’t done work before?

JS: I think that if someone is considering cosmetic surgery, they should definitely spend time researching the procedure to ensure their expectations are in line with what results can be achieved. It is also important that patients find a surgeon who they connect with on all levels. For instance, when a patient comes into our practice, my team and myself are focused on ensuring the patient feels as safe as possible, and my goal is to help them understand what results are possible so they have realistic expectations of the overall outcome.

Do you have a favorite procedure you like performing?

JS: Every surgery that I perform is special, as no two procedures or patients are alike. In my opinion, each treatment is very unique and requires that I fine-tune my attention to detail in order to customize a surgical plan best suited for that specific patient. This being said, I do enjoy facial plastic surgery procedures, specifically facial rejuvenation, rhinoplasty and challenging reconstructive procedures of the facial structures the most.

What can patients expect when meeting with you and going through your practice for work?

JS: Our practice is one that welcomes patients to put their guard down and hone in on what is truly bothering them. It’s important that patients feel comfortable enough to open up to me and my team so
we are able to get to the core of their concerns and not just the superficial part of it. Patients can expect a detailed consultation so that we can discuss all options and ensure their overall expectations are as close to reality as possible.

Are there any misconceptions of your field that people may have?

JS: It’s hard to say, as I imagine everyone views plastic surgery differently. It has become so much a part of mainstream media and of immediate culture that many people may view it more lightly than what it is. When we meet with patients, we focus heavily on guiding them through the many stages of the surgical journey to ensure they are comfortable with the process and are realistic in their expectations. I focus on connecting with my patients on an emotional level, as many patients seek plastic surgery to achieve some form of happiness, which is very much an internal process. While plastic surgery can make someone look better and turn back the hands of time, it is also important that individuals realize that plastic surgery is not the answer for overall happiness.

What do you hope your legacy will be?

JS: With regard to my career in plastic surgery, I feel as if my legacy will be that of a surgeon who has always put his patients first and who consistently introduced innovative and creative procedures intended to offer the most refined results always. I’ve devoted a lot of my time teaching students and residents the artistry and judgment in plastic surgery. In relation to the legacy of my life, my desire would be to have positively impacted the lives of everyone I’ve come in contact with throughout, especially those closest to me―to have positively influenced their overall approach to better humanity.

Over 50 guests were in attendance at the event, including Miami Heat minority owners Nancie and Bob Sturges, Tracy Mourning, Monique Mosley, Dr. Allan Conningham, Jenine Howard, Alexis Stoudemire, Doran Dragic, Mister E and Lauren Sturges Fernandez.  A variety of deliciously crafted food items were available to fit almost any craving. LOLA by Alyssa Simone was founded in 2014, although Alyssa’s passion for the arts dates back to her childhood when her mom first signed her up for dance lessons at age 4. Amidst the chic event, Simone takes a minute to reflect on the influence the women in her life, both her mother and grandmother, have played in her journey as a creative.
“The inspiration behind [my handbag line] are my mother and grandmother,” Simone says. “LOLA stands for living out loud always and Lola [my grandmother] has instilled that in all of us by being the matriarch and vessel in our family.”

The collaboration has been in the works between both Simone and Britto for over two years, as they first sat down to discuss the idea in late 2016. The trendsetting and chic collection includes a variety of colors from bright yellows and blues to blacks and golds. Each purse is unique in its own way, with hints of both Britto and Simone’s artful touches on each.

Spearheaded by Mayi de la Vega, ONE Sotheby’s International Realty is recognized as a powerhouse market share leader in the industry. The brokerage firm has built its success around the reputation of its agents and the success stories of each client. Now, as the company expands to over 17 offices in the South Florida area, with presence in foreign markets like Brazil, Argentina, Canda and Mexico, Mayi de la Vega and Daniel de la Vega reflect on the last 10 years of ONE Sotheby’s and what’s to come for the successful firm.

What prompted the start of ONE Sotheby’s International Realty?

Mayi de la Vega: Ten years ago, I saw an opportunity in the market to build a global luxury real estate brand in South Florida. Sotheby’s International Realty had the heritage, marketing and reach that I thought South Florida needed. I fell in love with the brand, it was love at first sight! I purchased the franchise in South Florida and founded the company in 2008 during the depths of one of our country’s worst recessions. Many friends and colleagues, even family members, thought I was crazy – but I had a vision and could sense that Miami was changing. The city was always a hot spot for tourism but was ripe to develop into a real hub for business, art and culture. I knew a global luxury real estate firm was the future.

Nataliya Cola is an arts academic and prolific international media contributor dedicated to the study of art culture, philosophy and religion. Haute Living caught up with Nataliya for a haute look at the best places to dine and the lifestyle offered in Monaco.

On Monaco…The residential crowd is cozy, to say the least; very small residential community of roughly 2 square kilometers. However, within those kilometers lies over $90bn Euros in cash, the highest concentration of wealth in the world. And so we see a strong collection community, disproportionately art-centric collectors and each resident seemingly committed to luxury living.

The community vibe is..Surprisingly quiet.  Monaco is safe, a great place to raise a family.

The lifestyle offered is …Sophisticated, relaxed, a largely social culture of yacht clubs, private sports clubs, however underneath lies the core of the fiscal ‘hustler’, never satisfied, in constant competition.

The best spot to dine fancy is

Robuchon at the Metropole, The Grille, Cipriani, to name a few.

The best spot to find entertainment is…

The Sporting club and specifically during the last week of September.

The best place to take in local culture is

From the days of the Pirate Grimaldi, the question is, has local culture maintained in Monaco? Yes, there is the Castle of the Prince, with guided tours held during the peak of tourist season in the summer. However, Monaco’s history has evolved to today encapsulate, romance, exotic vacation destination and of course, a refined world view defined in part by a distinct culture most appreciative of the arts.

The star-studded crowd enjoyed of iconic performances by some of the industry’s dominating artists like Reik, Anitta, Thalia, Juanes, Natti Natasha, Prince Royce, Alejandro Sanz and the “founding father” of Reggaeton Daddy Yankee who performed his greatest hits like “Gasolina” “Lo Que Paso, Paso” and “Rompe” alongside Ozuna, J Balvin, De La Ghetto, Yandel and Zion & Lennox. But it wasn’t just the performances that were heating up the night — this year’s pink carpet looks were just as jaw-dropping as the performances. Here’s a look at our top best-dressed artists of the night at this year’s Premio Lo Nuestro Awards.

London-based Designer Ming Ray believes every sophisticated woman carries within the touch of lighthearted innocence. Thus, her self-titled couture handbag collections feature timeless box-bags with shooting star top-handles and ladylike mini-trunk with embellishments reminiscent of Jeff Koons’ Hanging Heart sculpture. Ray’s new collection encompasses the essence of “Haute Cute,” offering fashion enthusiasts a sophisticated yet fun and flirty handbag collection that taps into the refinement and elegance of luxury. Haute Living caught up with the distinguished designer who discussed where she draws inspiration from, how she began her journey in fashion and the fashion designer she’d absolutely love to collaborate with.

HL: Tell me how you got started in the industry

MR: When I was 8 years old I saw John Galliano’s first collection for Dior on TV and that was it for me, I decided to become a designer on that day. I studied and worked in fashion before my passion shifted to accessories.

HL: What is the inspiration behind your designs and stunning collection?

MR: I look at everything through the lens of that little girl in me. That’s how I add that twist of fun and whim in all of my designs.

HL: How would you describe your collection?

MR: My brand philosophy is “Haute Cute,” it offers you all of the refinement and elegance of luxury made by master artisans in Italy but then that touch of light-hearted innocence that every sophisticated woman still carries in her.

HL: What designers do you draw inspiration from?

MR: John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Eiko Ishioka (costume designer) and jewelry designer Joel Arthur Rosenthal.

John Galliano was the first person who made me want to become a designer when I was 8 years old. I saw his first collection for Dior on TV and that was it for me, this was the job I wanted. His maverick attitude and flamboyance definitely influenced me to this day.

There was a period of time during which my interest suddenly shifted from fashion to consumer design, I became obsessed with Eiko Ishioka’s works. Her style was very surreal, almost like a mind game, yet her designs would fit each era she designed for perfectly. She definitely taught me to fearlessly ignore all traditions and just show the world how I interpret beauty, they can take it or leave it.

Alexander McQueen’s philosophy and technique played a huge part in helping me forge my own creative direction. My time at McQueen helped me perfect my understanding of jewelry design. And that’s when I became fascinated with Joel Arthur Rosenthal. You can definitely see my own designs heavily influenced by the art of jewelry.

HL: What can people expect from Ming Ray this year?

MR: Look out for super fun raffia summer bags, leather day bags with a wider range of colors and textures as well as more exotic skin options.

HL: Who is your ultimate celebrity or designer that you’d love to collaborate with?

MR: Marchesa Luisa Casati. She was so ahead of her time, a true legend. It must have been so liberating to design for her. She was fearless with her style.

HL: What are your plans this year for your brand and collection?

MR: I have expanded my handbag categories and material options as compared to just evening bags in mostly exotic skins when I started. We continue to grow our strength which is exotic skin handbags, but we will have a much fuller range of summer bags in wicker and raffia, as well as more color and material options for everyday leather bags.

Adding to the centre’s rolodex of exhibitions, Nader proudly presents Soto to Vigas which will be on display from May 30th – July 31st.

Soto to Vegas will showcase Venezuelan masters Jesus Rafael Soto and Oswaldo Vigas, two of the 20th century’s most influential Venezuelan artists. The exhibition will honor Soto and Vigas’ impact in the development of modern art in Latin America with their distinctive art aesthetics and contemporary approach.

“Artistic creation is a force which should preferably be directed towards the exploration of space, of the universe, of the infinite realities which surround us, but of which we are hardly conscious,” Soto said.

Christopher Coleman, Joyce Noujan, Angel Sanchez

Soto has devoted his career to exploring the meaning of life through his art and has found his niche in abstract art such as his coveted “Penetrables” artwork which explores how the environment interacts with its surrounding space and receptors.

Oswaldo Vigas. Isleña, 1989, oil on canvas, 33.46 x 29.52 in.

For Vigas, the inspiration behind his art stems from the natural and cultural landscapes of his homeland as well as the European avant-garde movements of the 20th century. During the 1950s, Vigas transitioned over to geometric abstraction which allowed him to explore and express his cultural background and personal identity.

The Soto to Vigas art exhibition will be on display at Gary Nader Art Centre located at 62 NE 27th Street, Miami, FL 33137.

Antonio Banderas On The Impact And Future Of Miami Fashion Week

Miami Fashion Week is the second largest fashion week in the country and fifth-largest fashion week across the globe, and for good reason. The highly-coveted fashion week event, spearheaded by Honorary President Antonio Banderas has revolutionized the industry by thinking outside the box and curating a week-long event that not only focuses on the luxurious, over-the-top glamorous appeal of fashion but also brings awareness to the deep-rooted issues of the industry such as labor conditions and sustainable designs. Held at Ice Palace Film Studios, Miami Fashion Week serves as the perfect backdrop to international talent with its diverse cultural scene as some of Latin America and Spain’s most renowned household names come together to showcase their latest collections.

“The concentration of the Spanish community here is enormous. In a way, I would love to re-brand the week to be Miami’s Spanish Fashion Week or something along those lines,” Banderas said in an exclusive interview with Haute Living. “There’s so much great talent that taps into the community here, from Mexico to Honduras and now this year, the Dominican Republic.”

Part of Miami Fashion Week’s tradition is to honor a Latin American country by bringing forth emerging talent and showcasing their collections on the pasarela (runway) and this year, the event honed in on the Dominican Republic, including acclaimed designers Jenny Polanco and Arcadio Díaz, Jacqueline Then and Giannina Azar.

“This year, it was important for us to showcase [Dominican] talent. It’s a booming country with a lot of culture and talent that is ready to be exposed here in America,” Banderas said.

The fashion soiree launched on Wednesday, May 30th, with an exclusive kick-off party at Brickell City Centre’s Saks Fifth Avenue with Miami’s most stylish fashion influencers as they enjoyed small bites, deliciously-crafted cocktails and lively music. Following the party, a select group of fashion week attendees were invited to join Banderas and the Miami Fashion Week team at Chotto Matte for an intimate Designers Dinner in celebration of this year’s acclaimed designers.

Antonio Banderas at the Designers Dinner at Chotto Matte

Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada opened this year’s Fashion Week with a vibrant and colorful collection showcasing her ability to tap into the innocence and playfulness of oneself. For Banderas, this year’s Fashion Week focused on tapping into the theatrics of the pasarela, something he was certain Ágatha de la Prada’s show would be able to bring to life.

“[de la Prada] is a dear friend of mine. She has the ability to bring to life one’s fantasies and imagination into the enchanting world that is fashion. I love what she brings to Miami Fashion Week,” Banderas said.

On Friday, May 31st, Daniella Battle, Herminas Reea and Vero Diaz took over Ice Palace Film Studios with sold-out shows throughout the evening. Notable attendees during Friday’s runway shows included Aida Domenech, Karina Salmen and Maria Claudia. Later in the evening, guests were invited to the Miami Fashion Week Benefit Gala hosted by Antonio Banderas. This year’s gala featured a surprise special performance by Juanes. The highly-anticipated event raised funds for both the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Foundation and Lagrimas y Favores, the latter founded by Antonio Banderas.

Emilio Estefan, Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada and Lili Estefan at this year’s Miami Fashion Week Benefit Gala

Miami’s most stylish fashionistas came together on Saturday, June 1st, for an Influencer Brunch at Speaspice where guests got to enjoy a delicious breakfast spread with mimosas ahead of the evening’s runway shows. Later on, Glory Ang and Fernando Alberto Atelier took over Ice Palace Film Studios to debut stunning, ready-to-wear collections. The jam-packed, week-long festivities came to an end on Sunday, June 2nd, with the grand finale: the Dominican Republic designer shows including Jenny Polanco and Arcadio Diaz, Jacquline Then and Gianna Azar.

As Antonio Banderas and the Miami Fashion Week team prepare for the future of the prestigious fashion event, Banderas reflects on what the last few years have been like as Miami Fashion Week celebrated its 4th Annual run this year.

“Fashion has no language, no barriers. [Miami Fashion Week] will continue to bring awareness to international talent and we hope to be able to continue to assist the discussion around sustainable fashion,” Banderas said.

Ugo Colombo Brings Italian Design To Miami’s Cosmopolitan Skyline

Downtown Miami’s hottest neighborhood celebrates a true architectural icon with the highly-anticipated Brickell Flatiron on track for completion this summer. Nestled in the heart of Brickell, this luxury sky oasis is set to revolutionize Miami’s iconic skyline. Developed by the visionary mastermind, Ugo Colombo and designed by Luis Revuelta, Brickell Flatiron will showcase a 64-luxury tower with top-of-the-line materials and finishes hailing from Milan. Haute Living caught up with one of the Magic City’s visionary masterminds who dished on what sets the renowned Brickell development apart from others in the city, the inspiration behind the iconic project and what’s next for him.

Ugo Colombo, an Italian-born real estate residential and commercial developer based in Miami, Florida

HL: What sets Brickell Flatiron apart from other developments in the city?

UC: Since arriving in Miami, I have envisioned Brickell’s potential as a high-end residential neighborhood. Our development firm, CMC Group, began investing here in the early-1990s with Bristol Tower and Santa Maria – the first luxury towers to rise in this part of the city. We took a risk at the time, but we felt that this setting could be unique for its urban environment and proximity to the water. We believed that Brickell would be capable of luring premium buyers, provided that we delivered a premium product.

At the time, downtown Miami was not proven as an urban neighborhood. Our firm viewed Brickell and Downtown as a ‘blank canvas’ that would one day come to life as a vibrant residential and commercial district where streets were alive 24 hours a day. Today, those dreams are a reality. More than 150 towers have since risen as Miami’s urban core has become a mini-Manhattan. It was only a matter of time, given Miami’s land constraints and the trend toward urbanism. In the 25 years that have passed, the Brickell brand has become synonymous with luxury living, premium dining and retail, and international tourism and business.

Brickell Flatiron, our newest development getting ready to deliver this summer, will benefit from top-notch amenities, premium imported finishes and functional living spaces. But above all, it will stand out for its unique lifestyle – it will be woven into the urban landscape. Our residents will walk outside their door and find themselves in the heart of a major city – a few steps away from the best shopping, restaurants and nightlife that Miami has to offer.

Brickell Flatiron
Brickell Flatiron’s Sky Spa Rooftop Pool

HL: What was the developing process like and the inspiration behind the iconic project?

UC: CMC Group has always developed at our own pace, typically building only one or two developments at a time. Some firms race to build the most product in the shortest amount of time, but we believe there’s value in being deliberate when it comes to planning, designing, constructing and selling a project. This allows us to emphasize the highest degree of quality over speed and volume. If a project takes a little more time and money to construct, so be it. In the end, the finished product will be stronger and more valuable to the end user.

In terms of inspiration, I like to think a real estate development is a reflection of a moment in time. That has been the case with all of our projects, and I believe Brickell Flatiron is a reflection of Miami’s coming of age as a cosmopolitan city with a thriving downtown at its heart. The name echoes Manhattan’s famous Flatiron building – and the similarities go well beyond the shape. In Brickell, you can live without driving, you have public transportation across the street from your building, you can walk to 20 amazing restaurants in the neighborhood. The lifestyle is becoming very much like New York – except you can be at the beach in minutes!

Brickell Flatiron
Inside look at a jaw-dropping Brickell Flatiron Penthouse

HL: How will residents get to experience the ultra-luxurious Italian experience at Brickell Flatiron?

UC: Brickell Flatiron will benefit from top-notch amenities, premium imported finishes and functional living spaces. We pay particularly close attention to sourcing the best materials from Italy– Italian marble, Venetian stucco, and the highest quality glass available in the market. I have personally handpicked every detail to make sure we deliver the best quality product.

Brickell Flatiron aerial skyline views

HL: As one of Miami’s key developers, what do you see next for the city?

UC: In line with what we’ve experienced over the past 25 years, Miami will continue to grow as well as it’s skyline. The city’s population is expected to eclipse to 100,000 in the next three years. I also imagine we will see further innovation in construction and engineering techniques, which will continue to raise the bar when it comes to design, amenities, and efficiency.

Brickell Flatiron’s Community Room area

HL: What’s next for you and your projects?

UC: We’re seeing luxury buyers today moving away from the beachfront and placing great value on the benefits of urban living – proximity to offices and hotels, arts and culture, shops and restaurants. Many of these buyers are coming from cities like Chicago, New York and Boston. The urban lifestyle is familiar to them, and they can purchase a top-line unit in Miami for far less than what it would cost in New York.

As far as what’s next for me, my main focus right now is putting the finishing touches on Brickell Flatiron. We’re looking forward to seeing it deliver and open to residents this summer.

High Fashion Meets Online Retail With Italian-Made Chaloka Ready To Wear Line

Chaloka is a women’s ready-to-wear fashion label hand-made in Italy that aims to bring back the essence of high fashion to the world of online retail. But for founder and CEO, Stephanie Chaloka, the brand is much more than a fashion label. The new fashion brand will focus on creating exclusive ready-to-wear spring/summer and fall/winter collections that portrait confidence, uniqueness and empowerment.

While other fashion brands and online retailers may gear towards the trends of the moment, i.e. the over saturation of neon items seen throughout most major collections today, Chaloka’s first resort collection will incorporate more of a classic and sophisticated approach with very clean and chic pieces based on minimalistic design and neutral colors.

“We’re not inspired by trends, instead we are deviating from [them] and building our own identity that inspires and empowers women,” Chaloka said.

The identity of the brand is rooted in Chaloka’s personal experience while in Miami when she wore one of the prototypes from the upcoming collection. While those around her looked at her outfit and wanted every detail from who designed it, where it was from, when it was releasing,  it was how she felt in the moment that made the most impact on the company’s identity.

“I felt confident, I felt empowered and unique. There was a bunch of people in the restaurant so I had this one in a million one of a kind moment,” Chaloka said. “[I thought to myself,] if I can make a brand and make other women feel like this, it will be extremely powerful. It’s the driving force of the brand and the background and it’s personality.”

With the brand’s upcoming launch, Chaloka hopes to re-shape the way consumers and fashion enthusiasts look at high fashion and ready-to-wear fashion labels. Centered around curating a concept that boosts a woman’s self-confidence, Chaloka is more than just a fashion label, it is an attitude.

“At the end of the day, we want the person’s aura and figure to come through the design and make them feel beautiful,” Chaloka said.

Chaloka will launch on Tuesday, June 11th at 10 a.m. EST.

TAG Heuer celebrated its new boutique opening in Aventura Mall with brand ambassador and art provocateur, Alec Monopoly. The coveted graffiti artist first partnered with the timepiece brand in 2016 as an ambassador and was later appointed Art Creator in 2017 at Miami’s Contemporary Art Week. Always one step ahead of his time, Monopoly has created several watches with TAG Heuer inspired by his own highly-renowned artwork. Haute Living caught up with Alec Monopoly at the brand’s exclusive opening of its new boutique where the artist dished on his most memorable experiences, favorite timepiece and more.

Haute Living: You’ve been an ambassador for the brand for several years, what about it drew you to partner up with them and what synergies do you see between your brand and theirs?

Alec Monopoly: This brand is accessible to millennials, the price point makes it accessible to millennials and they are a big part of my fanbase. TAG Heuer is an international brand and my artwork is conceived international and so it works really well together between my brand and TAG.

HL: You’ve traveled the world with the brand, what’s been one of your most memorable moments of being a TAG Heuer ambassador?

AM: I think my trip [with TAG] to Asia was amazing. I went to China and spoke with the university there. It’s a beautiful country and it was an amazing experience.

HL:  What are some of your favorite timepieces from the brand that you own?

AM: I would have to say my signature piece. The Carrera Calibre Heuer01 is my favorite timepiece.

HL: What have you learned about watchmaking through your partnership with TAG Heuer?

AM: I’ve learned that it’s actually very complex and hard. These guys have extremely steady hands, even steadier than mine and I have a pretty steady hand. It’s crazy how they put all the pieces together and create such great timepieces.

HL: What are some cool elements of the new boutique at Aventura Mall?

AM: It’s cool because I actually shop at [Aventura Mall] a lot. It’s one of the best malls in Miami so it’s great to have an access point here and I’m sure everyone that shops here as well will be able to say the same. It’s nice to have TAG Heuer both at [this location] and also in the Miami Design District.

The Cast Of “When They See Us” On Bringing The Exonerated “Central Park 5” To Screen

When They See Us is the most-talked-about limited-series to premiere on Netflix’s streaming channels in 2019 and arguably, ever. Created by the visionary mastermind and award-winning filmmaker, Ava DuVernay, the limited, four-part series brings to life the infamous 1989 case, where five teenage boys of color were wrongfully convicted for the tragic rape and brutal beating of a woman jogging through Central Park. While there are other television shows and movies that tackle the topics of racial profiling, systematic errors and racism, it is DuVernay’s extraordinary vision and approach to the telling of this story that sets When They See Us apart from any other project. DuVernay has dedicated her career to bringing to light stories of minority groups, primarily those of the African-American community that may go untold.

Famously known for award-winning projects like Selma and 13th, a Netflix documentary that sheds light on the systematic racism and racial inequalities of America’s prison system, DuVernay set out to tell the heartbreaking story of Kevin Richardson, Anton McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise and Raymond Santana, famously known as the Central Park 5. She casts a spotlight on America and its systematic injustices towards people of color. While DuVernay serves as the show’s director, writer and producer with other notable producers such as Oprah Winfrey joining the acclaimed project, it was the flawlessly casted ensemble that catapulted the Netflix series to its mega-success, including becoming the streaming platform’s most-watched series and shaking up the race for the 2019 Emmy Awards. Here, Haute Living sat down with castmembers Jharrel Jerome, Chris Chalk, Jovan Adepo, Freddy Miyares and Justin Cunningham who share what it meant for them to be able to tell this story to the world and bring awareness to a case that, even some of them, were not too familiar with before taking on the role.

Haute Living: When They See Us became an instant success overnight and tackles topics centered around systematic issues and racism within the prison and legal system. What do you hope viewers get out of watching the series and learn more about the case?

Jharrel Jerome: I think we’re still among modern-day slavery when it comes to [prisons] throughout the country. There are so many prisons, so many jails, I don’t think any of us know the exact number; it’s ridiculous. So, that kind of conversation and those kinds of ideas don’t get brought up with people my age at all. Especially on my block [the Bronx], we know the idea of making sure we don’t do anything that may get us in trouble with the police, of course, but what goes beyond that car ride to the precinct, once you do, is unheard-of and unspoken of. So, for this project to be watched by kids my age and even kids younger, I think is so important. [When They See Us] highlights the unfair and unjust legal and prison system that none of us want to end up in.

HL: Were you familiar with the “Central Park 5” case before taking on the role of Korey Wise?

JJ: [A lot of people my age] aren’t familiar with it. Even being from the Bronx [myself], I did not hear of the story in-depth. It was talked about around the house and community, almost as a lesson maybe, but no, it was nothing I truly understood fully until Ava brought it to us.

Jovan Adepo
Jovan Adepo

HL: Was there something you learned when studying the case and getting to meet Anton McCray that you weren’t necessarily aware of before?

Jovan Adepo: I think the psychological effects that being [incarcerated] has on people who are newly released into society. I have a couple of family members who have spent time incarcerated and the process of trying to rehabilitate your life and find your flow, so to speak, in life after [prison] is stressful and almost impossible. I think trying to find a job and just looking for an opportunity to show your worth and not necessarily finding that can definitely have an effect on your spirit and confidence.

HL: In terms of taking on this role, what do you think was the toughest challenge?

JA: In my case, Anton [McCray] is a very private person who doesn’t discuss what he went through too much. So, I had to tap into his body motions, facial expressions, and other mannerisms that allowed me to tell his story without too many words. The luxury of approaching my role in this manner allowed me to truly get to know [McCray] and understand his ability to listen, and truly grasp what is going on around him, and learn that he doesn’t waste his words on anything that’s not important.

Freddy Miyares
Freddy Miyares

HL: It’s your first fully-realized character on camera – what has your experience been like throughout the whole process with filming When They See Us, to seeing how it is resonating with viewers?

Freddy Miyares: It means the world to be involved in something this influential. I didn’t [truly understand] the impact it would have – I mean I knew it would have an impact but I did not expect it to be what it’s become. I have learned a lot throughout the whole process, from the technicalities of shooting to all of the research I had to do on my part to understand the case and [Raymond Santana]. Ultimately though, the most important step for me was to open up emotionally. Ava [DuVernay] was extremely helpful throughout the whole process by being patient and supportive and encouraging me to go deeper into my own sentiments and emotions, as well as Raymond’s.

hHL: What depiction of young Latino actors do you wish to see more of in the industry?

FM:  I think it’s important for us as a country to realize that the Latino experience is so complex and we all have a different story. The complexities of our culture, what it means to be a first-generation American, to speak or not speak Spanish, the differences between growing up in Miami as opposed to New York, all make up this story. It’s all very different and therefore a lot of grey areas that need to be addressed. I hope that more Latino actors watch [When They See Us] and are inspired in their pursuit to become actors because it’s an industry that sort of doesn’t support us but I think slowly the representation will be there and more stories will be told. I’m just glad I’m able to be at the forefront of that change.

Justin Cunningham
Justin Cunningham

HL: What was it like to work with Ava [DuVernay]?

Justin Cunningham: Working with [DuVernay] was one of the highlights of my career, and all-time, really. I have a pretty heavy theater background and so, she helped me along pretty vigorously throughout the whole shooting process by coming up after each take and having a conversation with one about what was just filmed. It allowed myself and [the other actors] to explore what it meant to be under the circumstances of [our characters.]

Chris Chalk
Chris Chalk

HL: How did you prepare to take on the role of Yusef Salaam and what did you learn from him through this process?

Chris Chalk: All of the information that is available to the public and all of the extensive factual research my castmates and I did to take on each of our roles, really allowed me to bring to life the technicalities of my character as well as tap into the emotional aspect of [Salaam]. Getting to meet [him] was incredible. I was able to read his poetry and get a sense of how his mind worked. He’s such an intellectual, smart and inspiring individual and I truly hope everyone gets a chance to meet him one day.

HL: There are so many elements to When They See Us. What do you hope viewers learn from this story?

CC: I hope everyone learns the facts. That’s certainly the main focus since, without that, you can’t truly have the dialogue and conversation that goes beyond that. Everyone is going to have a different emotional response to [the series] so whatever they take away from it, I hope they take positive action because it’s not just a movie. Unfortunately, things like this happen to people in our communities every single day and they don’t get a Netflix show to tell their story. We have to, at some point, take a stand and make sure things positively change.

An Art Enthusiast’s Dream: A Closer Look At Avant Gallery’s Latest Art Collection

Founded in 2007 in Miami Beach by Dmitry Prut, Avant Gallery, which also recently opened its New York location at Hudson Yards, has been known to push the envelope with its contemporary art exhibitions.  Here, we’re taking a closer look at some of the gallery’s latest and most jaw-dropping works of art including a reimagined take on Frida Kahlo, a Chanel twist on Mickey and Minnie Mouse, a Muhammad Ai & Sonny Liston lifesize knock-out scene made out of newspaper, and more.

Menace to Society, 2018BNS (Argentinian)
In Menace to Society, Mariano, known by his tag BNS, weaves together a psychedelic explosive portrait of Frida Kahlo. Jam-packed with symbolism and meaning, BNS gives the viewer a unique take on the life and work of the acclaimed artist. There is clear reference to pain and suffering, shown by the man with knives piercing his body and the praying skeleton but there is also a plethora of beauty — wallpaper-like imagery covers her face, flowers and decorative patterns peep through the background. The portrayal of Frida depicted here is complicated, one that mimics her inner life.
Avant Gallery
Salvator Mundi, 2019 Florian Eymann (French)

Florian Eymann, known for his dark oil paintings, experiments with the deconstruction of form and content by reinterpreting faces and expressions of traditional portraiture. In the painting shown here, Eymann gives the  viewer his take on the widely acclaimed painting, Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci. Eymann’s version not only manipulates the painting by the use of expressive brush strokes, but also by changing the face from Jesus to the Mona Lisa. Eymann’s style is often compared to the works of Francis Bacon, both for his abstraction of figures and stirringly raw imagery.

avant gallery
Rue Bois le Vent, 1971
Guy le Baube (French)

Named after a street in Paris, Rue Bois le Vent, presents the viewer with a wonderfully sultry photograph of a woman in the bath, smoking. Her nails seem perfectly painted, her makeup still unsmudged. She gazes far off camera, unphased by the intrusion of the photographer. The even, flat lighting in this image aids in creating a more casual atmosphere, one in which we can almost smell the scent of her cigarette, hear the water as she adjusts in the tub. Photographed by the legendary Guy le Baube, who was once the go-to photographer for Anna Wintour.

Bin Dunmou Tua Owei, 2018
Jacqueline Suowari (Nigeria)
Born and based in Nigeria, Jacqueline Suowari is a full-time ballpoint pen artist and draughtswoman. Her foray into art started from the early age of five and for the past decade, she has stunned her ardent collectors with magnetic pieces which over time, have grown larger than life. Jacqueline is motivated by the power inherent in the intriguing art of drawing.
“Hair is an important part of identity. The way a person choose to carry their hair portrays their sense of confidence and self appreciation. This is especially true when they choose to do it in a way that is not the usual. Dreadlocks and unusual amounts of facial hair in Nigeria used to only be associated with the spiritualist and mentally disturbed and so was not widely accepted. Today, that ideology of identity is rapidly transforming in its narrative but some are still passively discriminatory about it. Being able to carry hair this way, whether you are male or female portrays an inner strength and is something that I admire.” Jacqueline Suowari said.
Blue Door, 2019
LaSso (Cali, Colombia)
The blue door represents the blue passport. For an immigrant who comes to this country, the goal is to become a citizen and the passport represents this. People adapt to the culture and contribute with their own. That’s why the woman in the painting is wearing a hat that is representative of African decent from the Pacific coast of Colombia and the baby is wearing a Yankees hat.
Love Is The Only Way (emoji) 2018
Lina Condes (Ukraine)
Lina Condes, a Ukrainian artist, incorporates principles of bionic architecture and design into her work. Her sculptures such as Love is The Only Way (Emoji) reflect the emptiness and anonymity of common objects. Condes renders her work via computer technology, mimicking the personal removal of any mass produced item. Though emojis are meant to be used as modes of expression, because of their overuse worldwide, Condes shows us how emotionally hollow these characters have come to be by turning the character into a real life metal object.
Mickey’s Chanel Twist In Red, 2018
Skyler Grey (American, b. 2000)
Skyler Grey, the genre bending young artist, turns to fashion and cartoon imagery in Mickey’s Chanel Twist in Red, a work which forces the viewer to draw connections between two cultural kings of our time, a luxury brand and a pop icon. With Mickey as Karl Lagerfeld and Minnie as Coco Chanel, Grey manipulates our beloved mouse figures into the Chanel logo, their extremities dripping with paint. Grey’s fresh take on pop culture makes us question our relationship to these public symbols and what they mean to us.
Fun House 3Scale Model, 2018
Tom Fruin (American)
Tom Fruin, a contemporary American sculptor is known for his large scale installations. Fruin most commonly uses steel and highly-colored plexiglass to create monumental sculptures referencing local building structures. He describes his drive to make art that is publicly accessible, as well as sustainable by working with reclaimed materials and alternative energy. Fruin’s largest installation to date, the Water tower series, is installed on multiple rooftops across New York City and around the country. Shown here is one of his model scale studies, Fun House 3, which emanate the same sense of wonder as his larger works. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Ali Liston Knockout, 2018 Will Kurtz (American)

Will Kurtz demonstrates the mastery of his craft in this iconic ode to the greatest fightMuhammad Ali vs Sonny Liston. He uses wood, wire, tape, glue, magazines and newspaper to create hyperrealistic depictions. Through sheer effort and talent, Krutz takes an iconic scene and captures its true essence.

Luxury Oceanfront Living Never Goes Out Of Style

Designed for those who value the extraordinary, 1221 Ocean Avenue in iconic Santa Monica, offers luxury homebuyers an unparalleled oceanfront living experience. The property boasts sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean stretching from Palos Verdes to Malibu. Haute Living caught up with David Solomon, one of the country’s most successful real estate professionals with sales topping over $130 million, who dishes on why oceanfront property never goes out of style, the City of Angel’s current market trends as the year approaches into the 3rd and 4th quarter and what makes 1221 Ocean so special.

What attracts buyers to oceanfront property?

Besides the lifestyle that it provides, it has always been very exclusive to own or rent oceanfront homes.

Why do you think oceanfront living never goes out of style?

Who doesn’t enjoy going to sleep and listening to the waves crashing as well as waking up to it and putting your bare feet in the nice warm sand? The fact that you can live right on [the beach] without needing to get into a car to go enjoy it means it will never go out of style.

Why do you think some buyers are attracted to vertical while others are looking for horizontal living?

Often times when people have multiple residences, they want things to be as easy as possible and not have to fuss with all the upkeep with a house. In a highrise, you just pay your monthly dues or your rent and really have nothing to worry about. It also allows you to have superior views as you can be significantly elevated higher than a two-story house on the beach.

Interior view of lounge at 1221 Ocean Avenue Apartment Homes in Santa Monica, CA.

What are the current trends in your market and how are you preparing for the 3rd and 4th quarter of the year?

The oceanfront market in Santa Monica is still hot. We had two of the biggest sales that we have ever seen this year and I just set a record as well for the sale of a condo that I owned at 101 Ocean. The biggest issue right now is a lack of good inventory and this is pretty common in a place like Santa Monica. I can’t tell you how many calls/emails I get a day from agents asking me if I know of anything good coming to the market and for massive price points.

What is special about 1221 Ocean Avenue?

Real estate is all about location and in my opinion 1221 is in one of the best locations in the United States. The building sits right on the edge of downtown Santa Monica and the Pacific ocean . You are surrounded by world-class dining, awesome bar & lounges like Elephante & The Bungalow, great shopping, movie theaters, bike paths, the beach, tons of yoga & fitness studios, and two times per week one of the best farmers markets in the country. Beyond the location, you have a building that would be like the equivalent of living at The Four Seasons packed with the best amenities of any building in the area and units which all feature insane views. To top it all off you have by far the best rooftop pool and lounge in the city and a building that feels very private and exclusive.

HL: We know you’re working on a new album, what can your fans expect from it?

AJ: Sober [the song that premiered during this year’s Ultra Music Festival] is just the start but it’s gonna be a combination, you know. I’m not sure, but I’m definitely releasing both a lot of songs and a lot of club music in the next year.

HL: You recently hosted the Global Remix Battle, what motivated you to host it and do you have plans for another in the future?

AJ: We are actually planning the next one right now. We found four artists and the [two] winners, we signed. We are working together with them now on a steady base. We’re going to plan another one and we hope to sign more talent. Actually, one of the guys that we signed played with me during my Ultra set.

HL:  You’re a very sought after producer and one of the most innovative artists in the world. How have you progressed throughout the years as Afrojack?

AJ: I don’t really believe in evolution as an artist, you know, we’re all people. I quit drinking, and I quit smoking, and I quit the hard party [lifestyle]. I used to love the clubbing scene. Recently, I’ve been like a lot healthier, and like I said I quit drinking, quit smoking earlier, but also I get a lot more work done [because of this]. And that’s really something I’m striving for as a person and trying to get as much as possible out of my time, instead of just partying and having fun. I’m trying to continuously grow as a person and find the artist inside.

HL: Is there someone you haven’t collaborated with that you would love to?

AJ: I get this question a lot, and I used to think of all these artists. But honestly, I am very happy with the people I am working with right now. I would like to work more with artists that I have signed, as well as up and coming artists.

Food, art and fashion were a cause for celebration at the 3rd Annual Midsummer Daydream Vernissage Brunch, which took place August 11 at LaMuse Café. Located inside Downtown Miami’s contemporary Avant Gallery at the EPIC Hotel, attendees sipped on rosé from Whispering Angel at the city’s inaugural everyday rosé brunch.

“Since the inception of the event, we’ve continued to grow and attract Miami’s art crowd to come brunch with us, or as we like to say, Eat More Art,” said Dmitry Prut, founder of Avant Gallery who conceptualized the event in 2017, the same year he added LaMuse to the gallery space.

The endless rosé was accompanied by an incredible menu of drinks inspired by iconic muses and artists. Guests indulged in sips such as Frida’s Margarita, inspired by Frida Kahlo; Picasso’s Mule, a nod to Pablo Picasso; and Warhol’s Guava Punch, to honor Andy Warhol.

As guests enjoyed libations named after legends, they admired emoji-themed sculptures created by Lina Condes, whose candy-colored artwork is also on display at Avant Gallery. The chic artist has also shown consecutively at the 2017 and 2019 editions of the Venice Biennale.

Rounding out the festivities, ODDS, an edgy fashion concept boutique in Miami’s famed-design district, also showcased new couture pieces in a pop-up trunk show.

Prut, who founded Avant Gallery in 2007, brings mouthwatering, art-inspired bites to patrons at LaMuse Café co-located within the gallery’s EPIC Hotel location. Most recently, Prut opened Avant Gallery’s New York location in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards.

How Brian Crist And Philip Li Are Revolutionizing The Travel Industry With Business-Class

Brian Crist, founder and CEO of Business-class.com, wants travelers to fly in Business or First Class. And he’s found a way to provide award-winning client service with significant savings. It’s called Business-Class.com, a forward-thinking agency that is quickly setting a new standard in the travel industry. Whether it’s a meet and greet service at the airplane, chauffeur pickup and drop-off or booking the perfect hotel, Business Class always knows what to provide. Haute Living magazine caught-up with Brian Crist and Philip Li of Business-class.com to discuss their travel technology, 24/7 live service, and fully customized travel experiences.

What made you get into the travel agency in the first place?

As a young entrepreneur I often found myself flying across the globe – primarily, to Asia and Europe. Every time I walked down the aisle toward my not-so-exciting economy seat (in the very back of the plane), I would pass the business class section. It was always so spacious and orderly – and the passengers there were reclined with drinks before I even had my seat. I suddenly had a new goal: to become a business class flyer. When I finally did, I realized there were all kinds of people who were like me. Traveler friction is a real thing. I spend over 30 weeks out of the year on a plane. It must be enjoyable and comfortable or I won’t do it.

What sets Business-Class apart from other similar companies/services in the industry?

I would say it’s the marriage between cutting-edge technology and the human element. Many websites and agencies simply allow algorithms to deliver cookie-cutter offerings to their clients. It’s fast, but not necessarily a time-saver for customers. In most cases, this requires multiple searches and more research. Don’t get me wrong, the tech is great; but it can only go so far. We put all that technology in the hands of professional travel agents. Travel – whether for business or pleasure – is never a one-size-fits-all experience. Our agents know this, and they’re available to our clients 24/7 by sms, phone or app of their choice.

Another aspect that differentiates Business-Class.com is we shoot all of our own content. We hired well-known filmmaker, Philip Li, as our creative director. When Philip is not shooting Post Malone or French Montana or making appearances at the major festivals, you can find him shooting in the first class cabin or hanging off a yacht in Turkey to get that perfect shot. We don’t sell services that we don’t try ourselves, and we feel it’s important to capture these images and videos ourselves. No hired actors or closed-off sets; this content is the real deal – and all ours. Our clients know it and appreciate it.

In this day and age of booking everything via computer systems, how important is it to bring travel agents back into the picture?

How important? In a word, essential. That’s where our agility comes in. Many agencies have lost sight of the fact that an agent can listen, understand and customize an itinerary based on the nature of the trip – business or a vacation, for example. A person’s travel plans are usually quite unique and, often, even complex. So, offering a trip based on price, destination and date just don’t suffice in most cases. Having an experienced travel consultant who can help you plan and then book your trip based on your individual needs is rare these days. And, frequently, clients report significant savings – up to 60% off the published airline price. There’s no comparison. Our professional travel agents are the cornerstone of our business model and the reason our travel community has grown to 50,000+ members so quickly.

What can current clients expect from Business-Class.com?

Our current clients dictate the direction of the business, in a sense. Having personal interactions with your clients, rather than throwing computer-generated recommendations at them, allows you to serve them better. This is how we began establishing new partnerships and developing our VIP travel experiences. It speaks to our mission – of exploration and discovery. We’re partnering with some of the world’s top hotels, resorts, and live events promotions across the globe to deliver truly unforgettable experiences. We’re actually now in the process of producing a series of short films highlighting our exciting VIP tours. These films will be shown exclusively to our clients.

What can existing users or new clients expect from Business-Class next?

They can, of course, expect the same incredible customer service going forward. In fact, they expect us to expand upon this. We’re currently developing a personal travel concierge team to provide high-level service not only during the planning and booking process, but from the time you leave your home to the time you return. It’s an extensive and fully customizable VIP service that includes meet and greet, airport transfer, virtual closet delivery and 5 star hotels all at a significant discount. There are some amazing travel services out there and we are testing them one by one and integrating them into our platform. We expect to launch our new platform of services by 4th quarter this year.
